Benefits vs risks of using Chat GPT to write job descriptions- according to Chat GPT

Updated: Oct 1

I was curious about the benefits vs. risks of using Chat GPT to write job descriptions. So I asked chat GPT about the benefits vs. risks of using it to write job descriptions.

Here is what it had to say.

In an AI “interview' if you will, I asked Chat GPT to explain the benefits vs. risks of using Chat GPT to write job descriptions.

Woman with her eyes closed thinking

If you use the internet in some form or fashion, you have likely heard about Chat GPT, the AI tool taking the world by storm. The tool has fascinated the world with its capabilities to answer almost any question with excellent knowledge at even more unbelievable speeds, seemingly searching all recesses of the internet, organizing the data, and providing a concise response in mere seconds.

All over the internet, you can find videos, social media posts, and articles sharing strategies on how we can best utilize and capture the power of this tool in various professions for our gains and to become more efficient and effective with our time.

When I first heard about the tool, I thought, “this could write job descriptions.” Sure enough, chat GPT turned out a JD pretty quickly. Although generic, I quickly concluded that the resulting job description was something companies could use as a baseline and improve upon/customize.

This got me thinking about the benefits vs. risks of utilizing AI to write a job description. Time-saving was an obvious benefit of using Chat GPT, but how could the tool convey company culture, human emotion, and accurately portray what the organization represents?

As I thought about the benefits vs. risks of having Chat GPT write a job description, I thought, “I wonder what Chat GPT thinks the benefits and risks are of it writing these job descriptions?”

So I logged in and asked Chat GPT the question, effectively asking it the dreaded generic interview question we have all been asked: “tell me your strengths and weaknesses” related to writing a JD.

Here is what Chat GPT had to say when asked to “write me an article about the benefits vs. risks of using Chat GPT to write job descriptions.”

Chat GPT's Response

"As technology continues to advance, the use of AI tools like Chat GPT has become more prevalent in the workplace. One area where Chat GPT can be particularly useful is in writing job descriptions. While there are certainly benefits to using this tool, there are also potential risks that employers should consider. In this blog post, we'll explore both sides of the issue to help you make an informed decision."

Benefits of Using Chat GPT to Write Job Descriptions:

1. Time Savings

"One of the biggest benefits of using Chat GPT to write job descriptions is that it can save employers a significant amount of time. Writing a high-quality job description can be a time-consuming task. With Chat GPT, you can quickly generate a job description with minimal effort. Chat GPT can quickly generate a draft that can be tweaked and refined by a human."

2. Consistency

"Chat GPT can help ensure consistency in the language and tone used in job descriptions. By using the same tool to generate each job description, employers can avoid accidentally using different wording or phrases that could cause confusion among job seekers. This can be especially beneficial for companies with a large number of open positions."

3. Improved SEO

"Chat GPT can help optimize your job descriptions for search engines, which can improve your recruitment efforts."

4. Improved Diversity and Inclusion

"Chat GPT can help eliminate gender and racial bias in job descriptions by suggesting more neutral language. Since the AI tool doesn't have any preconceived notions or biases, it can generate descriptions that are more objective and neutral in tone."

5. Improved Candidate Experience

"A well-written job description can help improve the candidate experience by providing a clear understanding of the position and expectations."

Risks of Using Chat GPT to Write Job Descriptions:

1. Lack of Human Touch

"Chat GPT-generated job descriptions may lack the personal touch and creativity that human-written job descriptions can provide. This can make it harder to stand out from other job postings. Job descriptions are an important tool for attracting the right candidates, and a robotic-sounding description may not be as effective at engaging potential applicants."

2. Risk of Biases

"While Chat GPT can help eliminate some forms of bias, it's not immune to perpetuating others. For example, it may not be able to accurately capture the nuances of a particular job or industry, which could lead to bias in the description."

3. Potential for Errors

"While Chat GPT is designed to be accurate, there is always the possibility of errors or inaccuracies in the output. Employers need to carefully review and edit the descriptions generated by Chat GPT to ensure they accurately reflect the requirements of the job."

4. Legal Concerns

"Job descriptions must comply with various legal requirements, including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. There's a risk that Chat GPT-generated job descriptions may not fully comply with these requirements."

5. Lack of Industry-Specific Knowledge

At this point, Chat GPT got stuck and timed out. I’m unsure if it was my internet connection, the site being overloaded, or if the AI was struggling as we all have with that dreaded question, “tell me your weaknesses.”

Perhaps even AI struggles to admit it has faults, which ironically would make it more “human.”

I refreshed my page and prompted the question again, and Chat GPT was able to finish. Here is what it said in conclusion:

Chat GPT's Conclusion about itself

In conclusion, using Chat GPT to write job descriptions has both benefits and risks. While it can save time, ensure consistency, and promote objectivity, it may also lack the personal touch of a human writer, potentially contain errors, and carry legal risks. Employers should weigh these factors carefully and use Chat GPT as a tool to augment their human resources efforts, rather than as a replacement for them. By combining the strengths of Chat GPT with the expertise of human writers, employers can create effective job descriptions that attract the right candidates and help grow their business.”

I couldn’t have said it better myself.
