Performance reviews are an important tool for assessing employee progress, identifying areas for improvement, and giving employees desired feedback as to how they are performing in their roles. A baseline to assess employee performance and to easily share with employees how they are performing can be to compare their achievements vs. their job description.

Utilizing the job description as a tool in performance reviews will help to easily draw comparisons to what was required vs. what was delivered. What are some of the ways we can use job descriptions effectively in performance reviews?

Here are 5 steps you can take to start implementing the use of JDs in your performance review process.

Step #1 - Review the Job Description

Review the job description for the position being evaluated. The job description should clearly outline the job duties, responsibilities, and expectations. Use the job description as a guide to evaluate the employee's performance and identify areas where they have excelled or need improvement.

Step #2 - Set Goals and Objectives

Once you have reviewed the job description, set specific goals and objectives for the employee based on their job duties and responsibilities. This will give the employee a clear understanding of where they exceeded expectations, where they can improve, and provide an overall framework for evaluating their performance.

Step #3 - Use the Job Description as a Basis for Feedback

Feel free to include personal details and examples. The more relatable you or your website is, the more you connect with your readers.

Step #4 - Align Performance Reviews with Company Goals

Try different blog formats each time. One month, post a day in the life, then try a How-To or a Q&A. There are many templates to help you get started.

Step #5 - Identify Opportunities for Development

Finally, use the job description to identify opportunities for employee development. Based on the job duties and responsibilities outlined in the job description, identify areas where the employee can improve their skills or knowledge. This could involve providing additional training or resources, setting new goals or objectives, or giving the employee new responsibilities that will help them develop new skills.

Job descriptions are a valuable tool for conducting effective performance reviews. By using the job description as a guide for evaluating employee performance, setting goals and objectives, providing feedback, aligning performance with company goals, and identifying opportunities for development, employers can conduct more effective performance reviews that result in improved employee performance and a more engaged workforce.
